New Works Co-Authored by Harvey Newton
Two recent writings of Coach Harvey Newton appear in the current issue of International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching, a UK-based bi-monthly publication. In Volume 8, Number 3 of IJSSC Newton co-authored with noted biomechanist, John Garhammer, PhD, a paper entitled, “Applied Video Analysis for Coaches: Weightlifting Examples.” In the same issue Newton co-authored with Simon Jenkins, PhD, a piece entitled, “Should All Athletes Use Explosive Lifting?”
“These submissions were originally intended for a proposed new journal, The Annual Review of Strength Coaching,” says Newton. “Ultimately it was decided that rather than start a new publication, IJSSC would expand from quarterly to bi-monthly and one annual feature would be the topic of strength training.”
In the Garhammer-Newton paper coaches learn details on how coaches can most easily obtain both qualitative and quantitative video feedback of weightlifting technique. Several different types of video analysis software were utilized for the data published in this paper. Click here to download a PDF version of this paper.
Coach Newton, while in UK in 2011, lectured to university students on the benefits and challenges of weightlifting training for all sports. Simon Jenkins, PhD, who coordinated Newton’s visit, wanted this topic to be included in the inaugural issue of IJSSC’s annual emphasis on strength training.
