Strength and Power Notes October 2008

October Highlights

This October posting is late, due mostly to changes with the administration of the Newton Sports web site. Sorry for the delay.

The annual Joe Dube Classic weightlifting meet came off well at Jesse Reynolds’ new training facility in Jacksonville. I went up on Sunday to watch Doug Lane (www.crossfitameliaisland.com) experience his first weightlifting meet. Doug did well and learned a lot; already he’s entered in next month’s Masters’ American Open in Savannah.

It’s always great to see Big Joe Dube, America’s last male senior world champion (1969). Hard to believe it’s been nearly 40 years since a USA male lifter stood atop the podium, but such is the case. Joe remains active locally and on the national scene with plenty of solid training advice offered online and elsewhere. Also watching the Classic this year were brothers Buddy and Butch Croft, two of the strongest weightlifters to ever come out of the Sunshine State. They both lifted in the late 1970s and early ‘80s.

I also wanted to check on several of the lifters headed to Komotini, Greece in late November for the IWF’s World University Weightlifting Championships. I’m honored to have been selected as team leader for the USA delegation heading to this event.

In mid-October I participated in the 3rd Annual USA Cycling Summit at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Although I’ve presented at this event twice in the past, this year I sat in the audience and took part as a cycling coach.

It also gave me a good chance to showcase my new Strength Training for Cyclists System. I’ve partnered with long time friend and colleague, Ken Kontor (another former executive director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association), head of Performance Conditioning (www.performancecondition.com). More than 10% of the Summit participants purchased STFC, which certainly got the product off to a good start.

The remainder of October was spent working with a few new athletes seeking improvements in their strength training. As the month comes to an end, I’m headed back out to Colorado Springs for the 6th International Conference on Strength Training. Watch here for updates on presentations.

Thoughts on "Reflections"

Over the past several months I’ve featured here some Q&A related to my thoughts on pulling technique in the classic explosive lifts, the Snatch and the Clean. While I enjoyed reporting these details, no reaction for the readership leaves me wondering if the topic was of any interest.

Regardless, my plan is to include more similar content in future issues. I’ll also feature a sampling of questions I regularly receive, most of which deal with explosive training and/or technique. Do you have any questions or comments? Let me know.
