Strength and Power Notes November 2009
In November the World Weightlifting Championships took place in South Korea. As always, it will be interesting to compare results, both on the platform and in the testing laboratory. Overall, the US results were not impressive, the rest of the world interesting.
At press time the American Open Championships are underway. I’ve decided not to attend, but certainly wish all the lifters outstanding success.
Doug Lane, owner of CrossFit Amelia Island, and I got together for a short off-bike conditioning program offered at Open Road Cyclery in Jacksonville, FL the first week in December. We talked about basic and advanced training methods that produce results for cyclists, along the lines of my Strength Training for Cyclists. Needless to say, the workshop was a hit and we’re looking forward to an expanded format of training opportunities within the next year.
Most of my gear has been moved over to Pro Bodies Performance’s new building in Ormond Beach. As reported earlier, I’ll take a bit of space toward the back of the training center and set up shop. Stay tuned for more.
Around the first of the year Richard and Charlotte Campion, from Ontario, will be in Ormond Beach for three months as “snow birds.” Richard was the golden voice at many world championships and Olympic Games, and was the technical director of Canada Weightlifting while I was USA Weightlifting’s executive director. Richard works out religiously three times a week and this always gets me back to more regular training.
This past summer I had the pleasure of doing some work with volleyball players from Daytona Beach’s Warner Christian School. This team won their state championship in 2008 and just repeated this accomplishment in late November. Check the home page headlines for details on Warner’s training program and how a similar plan may benefit your team.
Speaking of volleyball conditioning, in December I’m headed to Dallas for a weekend workshop with Robert Brown (“Mr. Volleyball Conditioning”). Stay tuned for much more.
Within the coming month I’ll have an e-book on the power clean available and listed here. It’s been an interesting challenge getting all of the pieces together, but it’s in the final stages. Look for about 60 pages and plenty of Bruce Klemens’ great lifting photography.
Similarly, the Newton Sports Biomechanical Poster that compares record snatch and clean performances has been tweaked a bit, offering a sharper overall image and more attractive display. These should be out during December. Plans are in place for some additional posters in the near future, along with a new t-shirt and some other goodies.
The Newton Sports web site has migrated to a new hosting company and although there were a few glitches along the way, I think you’ll find the site works much more quickly and efficiently.
Holiday wishes to all for a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
