Strength and Power Notes June 2010
Last month’s USA Weightlifting Level I Coaches’ Course in Fort Vancouver, WA went extremely well. Thirty participants took part in the two-day course that was staged at CrossFit Fort Vancouver. Long-time friend Bridget Raach combined efforts with Adam Neiffer to host one of the finest programs I’ve had the pleasure to experience.
It was also nice to see Judy Glenney and Todd Lyons, both of whom are great resources for lifters in the Northwest. Judy, many times national and international lifter (and now referee) teaches at nearby Clark College. Todd works with Bud Charniga at Dynamic Fitness and is your point-of-contact for Adidas weightlifting kit. Both Judy and Todd were available to help lifters learn weightlifting technique.
Judy Glenney helps Chuck Gonzalez with his technique.

CrossFit Fort Vancouver proved to be a great course facility.
The following week I was in UK for about a week. The first few days were as a guest of Simon Jenkins, PhD, editor of the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching. While at Leeds Metropolitan University I had a chance to see the country’s national weightlifting training facility. Coach Tamas Feher was back in Hungary that week, but I did meet and work with other staff members.
The UKSCA conference was an outstanding experience. Not nearly as affected as the NSCA is by personal training and sports medicine professionals, the UKSCA had a strict focus on improved athletic performance. I did a hands-on session one day, followed by two lectures on developing what I call a “coach’s eye” the next day.
Thanks very much to Duncan French, PhD, Gil Stevenson, and the UKSCA staff for a great opportunity to meet with some very interested professionals.
Just back from the Fitness Expo 2010 in Charlotte, NC. Many thanks to Kim Kotz and Gina Josey for their help with a great series of workshops. Of course, when you’re up against a session entitled Flirty Girl Booty Beat, what chance did I have with Coaching the Power Clean? My other sessions on cycling power and research into fitness toys proved rewarding.
I’m off to help Maelu Fleck and the ISSN conference in Clearwater Beach this week.
The summer training camp has been canceled.
In a few weeks I’ll venture over to Orlando to take in the NSCA conference and connect with a few friends in the industry. I’ll probably sit in on the weightlifting special interest group and a few of the scheduled sessions.
Just after the first of August I’ll head to Colorado Springs for a USA Weightlifting workshop featuring the German national coaching staff. Stay tuned for plenty of discussion on the topics presented.
Soon you’ll be able to see my Dartfish analysis of lifts featured on the www.Newton-Sports.com home page. I’m interested to see your reaction to this new component, so please provide feedback. Meanwhile, a limited number of seats are available at www.dartfish.tv/newtonsports under the collection, Weightlifting Technique. Check it out now if you want to get in on the ground floor and receive notice on the latest updates when they occur.
