Strength and Power Notes December 2009
Robert Brown (“Mr. Volleyball Conditioning”) hosted an outstanding 12-hour volleyball coaches’ workshop on strength and conditioning in Dallas, December 5-6. We had a good turnout of coaches and the program provided some big insights into how volleyball athletes can optimize their resistance training. We covered basic and advanced exercise technique, plyometric drills, and program planning.

Robert Brown (“Mr. Volleyball Conditioning”) and Coach Harvey Newton
Dallas has some phenomenal volleyball facilities and Robert is the “go-to” guy for all the coaches. Look for more projects between Robert and me in the coming year.
Also in December, I did two medical seminar workshops in Orlando with long-time friend and colleague, Les Knight, PhD. This is always a good chance to provide medical professionals with an overview of resistance training, flexibility issues, and other germane topics.
The power clean e-book is just about finished. There have been some challenging design moments along the way, but things are coming together. Next month, I promise!
I had a nice chance to meet up with Jessica Gallagher, recently of the Northern Michigan training center. Jessica is from nearby Altamonte Springs, having trained initially with Danny Camargo. Jess is now headed to Idaho, which presents a few training challenges. We compared notes and agreed to stay in contact once she’s settled out West.
Jess’s mother, Jeanette Green, has been doing double duty as both a local masters’ lifter and a great weightlifting referee.
Jason Brown and Sean Hutchinson, both lifers and students at LSU-Shreveport, were in town and got in a little training session with me.
Toward the end of the month, Richard and Charlotte Campion will be in from Canada for a few months of vacation and training.
Two-time Olympian Derrick Crass and masters’ record holder Anne Lehman are due in between the holidays, so we plan to catch up and do some training as well.
2009 has been an interesting year, for sure. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
