Strength and Power Notes April 2010
A new and improved weightlifting Biomechanical Analysis poster is now available from Newton Sports. This poster has been a big hit with CrossFit “boxes,” schools, and garage gyms since its re-issue a few years back. Thanks to Matthew Bonazzoli of DVDocument (www.dvdocument.com) for cleaning up the original version of this popular poster. Buyers now get a much improved, high quality, ready-to-mount 32” X 24” at a lower price! Due to the quantity purchased, I’m passing on the savings to you. Check it out here.
Doug Lane (www.crossfitameliaisland.com) and I had a successful Performance Keys workshop April 3 in Amelia Island. The turnout was not huge, but everyone was enthusiastic about learning and reviewing the subtleties of advanced lifting.

The Pensacola program later in the month has been postponed.
Our Florida high school weightlifting season is wrapping up, with final sectional qualifiers finalized by the time you read this. Then it’s on to the state championships. I’ve not attended many high school meets this year, so I can’t report on any promising talent that’s been uncovered.
Thanks for Bob Takano, www.takanoathletics.com for his recent mention of Kobe Bryant’s use of weightlifting for improved basketball performance. Many times basketball players are among the least likely to train with explosive lifts, but Kobe proves it can be done. Carl Miller, national coaching director for USA Weightlifting in the 1970s, is readying another book. This is an updated and expanded version of his popular Olympic Lifting Training Manual, which has been out of print for some time. The new book’s title is, The Art of Olympic-Style Weightlifting: Training for the Connoisseur. Coaches and lifters will want to get this one as soon as it’s available. Check with Carl at: www.carlandsandras.com.
Just a note, I’ve never known Carl to use email. So if needed, give him a call!
Congratulations to Adam Neiffer, winner of the free copy of my Explosive Lifting for Sports book from publisher Human Kinetics. Find how Adam scored this prize when you read my weightlifting eBulletin.
Adam Neiffer is the owner of Fort Vancouver CrossFit (www.crossfitfortvancouver.com). He will host and take part in the May 22-23, USA Weightlifting Level I Coaching Course I’m conducting at his facility.
Robert Brown (“Mr. Volleyball Strength & Conditioning”) (www.rbrownsports.com) is firming up plans for his June 10-11 workshop in Dallas. I look forward to working with and learning from Robert again this year. Stay tuned for more information.
In need of a vacation in Great Britain this summer? I’ll present one lecture and two hands-on sessions at the UKSCA national conference, June 4-6 (www.uksca.org.uk/uksca).
Kim Kotz, Senior Program Director of the Dowd YMCA of Charlotte, NC is in the final stages of firming up the Expo 2010 workshop schedule, June 18-19. More details will be available next in next month’s Strength & Power Notes.
I’m in the final planning stages for a two-week junior training camp in Daytona Beach this July. It’s been a few years since I’ve done a camp, but with the current interest and the number of kids in need of help, I want to again offer instruction to young athletes.
