"In May, we had the privilege to host Harvey Newton for his Level I Sports Performance Coaching Course sponsored by USA Weightlifting. Having dedicated most of his life to the sport, Coach Newton's resume speaks for itself. What makes him truly special as an instructor is his ability to relate to coaches and athletes of all levels; from novice to Olympian.
Quality coaches are in high demand in the CrossFit community. Registration for Coach Newton's two-day course at CrossFit Fort Vancouver practically took care of itself. With participants from across the country as well as Canada, enrollment quickly reached capacity.
Along with developing quality coaches nationwide, Coach Newton's course could not have come at a better time for our gym. We immediately began implementing the techniques and programming portions into our daily workouts. Our beginners have never had a more solid foundation to build upon. Our competitive athletes have been rewarded with improvements in performance across the board. It's no coincidence that eight weeks after Coach Newton's course, our team put it all together to win the Affiliate Cup at the 2010 CrossFit Games.
If you're thinking about participating or hosting Coach Newton for a Sports Performance Course, stop thinking. Do it. You need it. Your clients deserve it."

USA Weightlifting High Performance Seminar
Mike Gattone, USA Weightlifting’s High Performance and Coaching Education Director, pulled together a great coaching seminar, August 6-8, at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center. Featured speakers were German coaches Frank Mantek (1980 Olympic bronze medalist) and Michael Vater, along with Poland's Zygmunt Smalcerz (1972 and 1976 Olympic Champion).
Sessions included a review of the German coaching system, a demonstration of their Realanalyzer video analysis system, Smalcerz’s report of his first month as the OTC residence coach, and roundtable discussions on general coaching topics of interest to the 40 or so gathered coaches.
IWF Vice-President Dragomir Cioroslan announced a new, enhanced effort on behalf of the IWF to step-up its game against banned substance use.
Overall, the program was a big success. More international seminars are planned for the future.

NSCA Revisited
The National Strength and Conditioning Association conference and tradeshow was held in Orlando this past week. As always, days of presentations on myriad topics were staged alongside a tradeshow featuring equipment, supplements, educational products, and other related topics.
“It’s always interesting to attend one of these shows,” Harvey Newton said from the conference floor. “It’s a great chance to see old friends, create new opportunities, check on the latest scientific attempts in the fitness field, and eat a lot of strange tasting supplements!”Again this year, there was a lot of attention paid to Olympic-style lifting, with representatives of UESAKA and Werk San USA available to show equipment and talk training. Several speakers addressed the topic of learning and/or applying weightlifting techniques for improved performance. The International Index Invitational, a one-hour demo of explosive performances by young athletes, featured a repetition hang power clean element. Watch for more details on this competition on this site.
During the 1990s Harvey Newton was the editor-in-chief of Strength and Conditioning Journal, the Director of Program Development and the NSCA’s Executive Director.

Explosive Lifting for Sports Undergoes Another Update!
Human Kinetics, the publisher of the popular Explosive Lifting for Sports, has again updated this text. You’ll remember that in 2006 HK teamed with Dartfish to include a free Dartfish content disc that showed my video analysis of snatch and clean-and-jerk, both in regular speed and frame-by-frame stop action. The disc was included inside the book’s cover flap.
| Times change and technology marches on. Turns out the disc was compatible only with Windows XP, but ELFS customers using Vista or 7 on their computers had to use a work-around to successfully view the content.
Dartfish, HK, and I have recently teamed up to provide the same content information free on my Dartfish.tv channel (www.dartfish.tv/newtonsports). So, new customers buying Explosive Lifting are now directed to this channel where they can review and download 16 clips to their computer at no cost. While on my channel, it’s easy to access the other collections included there. |
