Coach Newton Leads Successful USAW Level II Coaching Course
"We had 16 participants at the recent USA Weightlifting Level-II (Senior) Coaching course in Fernandina Beach, Florida" Coach Harvey Newton reported. "This was my first L-II course and I was pleased at the turnout and results (all passed). Many of the participants were coaches I’d worked with to obtain their Level-I certification."
"Once again, Coach Doug Lane of Sandbox Athletics provided a fantastic venue for the course and served as a great assistant coach," Coach Newton said. "Check out the smiles on the coaches’ faces as we took a group shot at sunrise on the beach. Beats the heck out of the winter temperatures many of these coaches had at home. This is the way to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday!"

Harvey Newton’s Commentary in the 2011 Annual Review of Golf Coaching
The recently published 2011 Annual Review of Golf Coaching, published by Multi-Science, (UK) includes commentary by Coach Harvey Newton on editor Simon Jenkins, PhD, article, "Accreditation of PGA Master Coaches."
"Golf and weightlifting share a number of similar characteristics," Coach Newton noted, "but the quality of coaching may differ considerably. This was a great opportunity to explain to golf professionals the details related to coaching a relative obscure sport, such as weightlifting."

Nineteen New USAW L-I Coaches Certified
Coach Harvey Newton led another USA Weightlifting Level I Coaches’ Certification Course this weekend in Fernandina Beach, Florida. "Thanks to Coach Doug Lane for hosting this great event in which all participants joined the ranks of USAW certified coaches," said Harvey Newton. "Club 14 proved to be an excellent venue for both the lecture and practical portions of the two-day course."
Newton will lead a Level-II (Senior) course at the same venue on February 3-5.

All smiles, even before the grueling Level-I comprehensive
test is administered at Club 14, Fernandina Beach, FL.
And, their reason for smiling? Everyone passed!
Harvey Newton Assists USAW L-I Course in Dallas
Again this year, Harvey Newton assisted USA Weightlifting with the conduct of their Level I Coaching Course at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Coaches’ Conference in Dallas, Texas. Deborah Stuard, Director of Training, was also present for DartfishTV. "Leo Totten, Dave Miller, Pat Cullen-Carroll, and I again joined forces to help dozens of coaches gain their USAW certification," Newton said. "While there I had a chance to network with many NSCA friends and to spend time at the Dartfish booth."

Get A Grip T-Shirt Now Available
Newton Sports has introduced a new t-shirt to its Apparel for the Gym product line. The new shirt, available in white, 100% cotton, shows the use of a hook grip, a standard practice among elite weightlifters. The “Get a Grip… a hook grip, that is” depicted in black on the front of the shirt is bound to get attention from lifters and non-lifters alike.
"A recent USAW senior coach course illustrated the fact that some beginning coaches and athletes either don’t know about the hook grip or they simply refuse to use it," says Olympic Coach Harvey Newton. "It’s hard to believe, but even among the many new CrossFit converts to lifting, the simple use of the standard weightlifter’s hook grip is apparently ignored. Who knows why? Maybe the shirt can be as informative as it is entertaining!"
Coach Newton goes on to say, "I first came up with the get a grip idea when at the NSCA in the mid-1990s. Kyle Pierce was the original hand model. Although one female staff member insisted no one, certainly not a woman, would wear such a slogan on the chest, a small run was printed for a national conference."
"And the rest is history: the shirts sold out immediately. For some years I’ve wanted to resurrect this concept, which reinforces the contribution of the hook grip for weightlifting success."
The t-shirt is available in all sizes: small, medium, large, extra large, and double extra large. Priced at $20 (XXL is $22) each and mailed USPS priority to USA addresses free. Foreign orders pay shipping and handling costs. For more info or to order click here.
